日本語

These Terms of Use (the "Terms") govern your use of the iOS application "Kanji Lens" (the "App") provided by the developer (the "Service Provider"). By downloading or using the App, you agree to these Terms.

Article 1 — Applicability

These Terms apply to all aspects of the relationship between users and the Service Provider regarding use of the App.

The App is independent of Apple Inc. ("Apple"). These Terms are solely between you and the Service Provider. Apple bears no responsibility or obligation under these Terms.

Article 2 — Description of the App

The App is a kanji learning tool that provides the following features:

Article 3 — Using the App

No account registration or login is required. You may begin using the App by downloading it from the App Store and agreeing to these Terms.

The App requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17.0 or later. Future updates may raise the minimum supported iOS version. Devices running older OS versions may be unable to install or run the latest version of the App, and the Service Provider is not liable for any resulting inconvenience or loss. Users who have purchased the Pro version (one-time) or the annual subscription may continue to use the App on any other device signed in with the same Apple ID that meets the system requirements.

If you are a minor, please use the App—particularly when purchasing the Pro version or annual subscription—only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. We recommend using Apple's Family Sharing and Screen Time features to manage in-app purchases.

Article 4 — Free Tier

The App is free to download. The free tier includes the following features:

Ads (Google AdMob) are displayed in the free tier.

Article 5 — Pro Version and In-App Purchases

  1. The App offers two paid plans (collectively, the "Pro version") that unlock the following additional features:
    • Unlimited word notebook entries
    • Word notebook export
    • Ad-free experience
    • Future premium features as they become available

    Available plans:

    • One-time purchase (Non-Consumable): A single payment that unlocks Pro features permanently.
    • Annual subscription (Auto-Renewable Subscription): An auto-renewing yearly plan. See Sections 7 and below for details.
  2. The price of the Pro version is the amount displayed in the App Store (including applicable taxes). Prices are subject to change without notice.
  3. All Pro purchases are made through Apple's App Store. Payment is processed using the payment method associated with your Apple ID. The Service Provider does not obtain or retain any payment information such as credit card details.
  4. The one-time Pro version, once purchased, is available on all devices signed in with the same Apple ID.
  5. If you reinstall the App or switch devices, you can restore your previous purchase or active subscription using the "Restore Purchases" feature within the App, using the same Apple ID.
  6. Refunds are processed in accordance with Apple's refund policy. For refund requests, please contact Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  7. Auto-renewal of the annual subscription: The annual subscription automatically renews at the same price and for the same period unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period. The renewal fee will be charged to your Apple ID payment method within 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  8. How to cancel: You can turn off auto-renewal (cancel the subscription) at any time from your iOS Settings:
    • Settings > [Your Name] (Apple ID) > Subscriptions
    • Select "Kanji Lens" > "Cancel Subscription"
After cancellation, you can continue to use Pro features until the end of the current billing period. Once the period ends, your account automatically reverts to the free tier.
  9. Free trials: If a free trial is offered, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being charged for the paid subscription. Free trials are generally limited to one per user (one per Apple ID).
  10. Unused portions: If you cancel mid-cycle, no refund is provided for the unused portion of the current billing period (except where Apple grants a refund at its discretion), in accordance with Apple App Store policies.

Article 6 — Advertising

The free tier displays third-party ads (Google AdMob). The App may request your permission to personalize these ads under the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework. Regardless of your choice, all App features remain fully available.

Purchasing the Pro version removes all ads from the App.

Article 7 — Intellectual Property and Content Licenses

  1. The App's software, UI design, logos, and other assets are the intellectual property of the Service Provider.
  2. The dictionary data used in the App is derived from the following open-source resources:
    Data Source Author License
KanjiDic2 Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG) CC BY-SA 4.0
JMdict Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG) CC BY-SA 4.0
    MeCab Taku Kudo BSD License
IPAdic Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA) IPA Dictionary License
    GRDB.swift Gwendal Roué MIT License
  3. Full license texts are available in the App under Settings > Licenses.

Article 8 — Prohibited Conduct

You may not engage in any of the following when using the App:

Article 9 — Permitted Uses

The App is intended for personal learning and educational use. Do not use the App for medical diagnosis, legal judgment, or safety-critical translations (e.g., traffic signs, warning labels). OCR recognition results are not guaranteed to be accurate and should not be relied upon for important decisions.

Article 10 — Suspension of the App

  1. The Service Provider may suspend or discontinue all or part of the App without prior notice in any of the following circumstances:
    • Maintenance or updates to the App's systems
    • Force majeure events such as earthquakes, lightning, fire, power outages, or other natural disasters
    • Any other situation in which the Service Provider determines that continued operation is difficult
  2. The Service Provider accepts no liability for any loss or damage suffered by users or third parties as a result of such suspension or discontinuation.

Article 11 — Your Data

All core App data (word notebook, scan history, settings, etc.) is stored only on your device. The Service Provider does not collect or retain this data on any server.

iCloud backup: A future update of the App is planned to add iCloud-based backup and cross-device synchronization of user data. When enabled, this data is stored in your own iCloud account associated with your Apple ID. Storage and synchronization are handled entirely by Apple's services, and the Service Provider does not access the contents of such data. Use of iCloud is subject to Apple's terms and policies.

If iCloud backup is not enabled, all on-device data will be permanently lost—and cannot be recovered—if your device is lost, reset, or the App is uninstalled. The Service Provider accepts no responsibility for the backup or restoration of data stored on your device.

For full details on data handling, please refer to our Privacy Policy.

Article 12 — Termination of Use and Data Deletion

  1. You may terminate your use of the App at any time by deleting (uninstalling) it from your device. Because the App does not require account registration, no separate withdrawal procedure is required.
  2. Uninstalling the App permanently deletes all on-device core data (word notebook, scan history, settings, SRS learning progress, etc.). The Service Provider has no means of recovering this data.
  3. If you have enabled iCloud backup, your iCloud-stored data is retained even after the App is uninstalled, and can be restored by reinstalling the App and signing in with the same Apple ID. To completely delete data stored in iCloud, go to Settings > [Your Name] (Apple ID) > iCloud > "Manage Account Storage", select "Kanji Lens", and delete its data.
  4. If you have purchased the one-time Pro version, you can restore Pro features after reinstalling the App by using the "Restore Purchases" feature with the same Apple ID.
  5. Important: Uninstalling the App does NOT cancel an active annual subscription. To stop auto-renewal, you must explicitly cancel the subscription from Settings > Subscriptions on your iOS device (see Article 5, Section 8).

Article 13 — User Responsibilities

  1. Equipment and connectivity: You are responsible, at your own expense, for preparing and maintaining the iPhone, iPad, software, communication lines, and other communication environments necessary to use the App. The Service Provider does not guarantee that the App is compatible with all devices, does not assist with the preparation, installation, or operation of equipment, and does not provide support for these matters.
  2. Network risks: You acknowledge that using the App—particularly features that involve network communication, such as AdMob ads, Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics, and iCloud sync—may involve traversal of various networks, and that depending on the networks and equipment involved, data and signals may be altered in transit.
  3. Self-resolution of disputes: You are responsible, at your own cost and risk, for resolving any disputes (including lawsuits, claims, and demands) that arise between you and other users or third parties in connection with the App. The Service Provider is not involved in such disputes. If such a dispute results from your willful misconduct or negligence and causes harm to the Service Provider, you shall compensate the Service Provider for the resulting damages.
  4. Lawful use: You are responsible for using the App in compliance with applicable laws. The Service Provider accepts no liability for any use of the App that violates the laws or regulations of the region in which you use it.

Article 14 — Disclaimer of Warranties

  1. The Service Provider makes no express or implied warranty that the App is free from defects of any kind, including those relating to safety, reliability, accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, security, errors, bugs, or infringement of rights.
  2. The Service Provider does not guarantee the accuracy of OCR recognition results or the completeness of dictionary data. Recognition results should be treated as reference information only.
  3. Dictionary data (KanjiDic2, JMdict) is based on open-source resources. The Service Provider maintains it with reasonable care but does not guarantee completeness.
  4. The Service Provider may, from time to time, provide information to users in connection with the App (including in-app announcements and support responses), but does not warrant the accuracy, usefulness, or effectiveness of such information.
  5. The Service Provider does not warrant that the App or related distributions are free from computer viruses or other harmful elements. Except in cases of the Service Provider's willful misconduct or gross negligence, the Service Provider accepts no liability for any damages arising therefrom.
  6. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service Provider accepts no liability for any damages arising from use of the App, except in cases of the Service Provider's own willful misconduct or gross negligence.
  7. Limitation of liability: Notwithstanding the preceding paragraph, in any case where the Service Provider is liable to you for damages, the Service Provider's liability shall be limited to the actual, direct, and ordinary damages incurred by you as a result of the Service Provider's breach of contract or tortious act, and shall in no event exceed the total amount you have paid to the Service Provider in connection with the App (whether for the one-time Pro version or annual subscription) during the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the liability. This limitation does not apply where the Service Provider's willful misconduct or gross negligence is established.

Article 15 — Changes to the App

The Service Provider may modify, add to, or discontinue features of the App with prior notice to users, and users agree to such changes.

Article 16 — Changes to These Terms

  1. The Service Provider may revise these Terms without individual user consent in the following cases:
    • When the change is in the general interest of users
    • When the change is reasonable in light of the necessity for the change, the appropriateness of the revised content, and other relevant circumstances, and does not conflict with the purpose of the App
  2. The Service Provider will notify users in advance of the nature of the change, the revised Terms, and the effective date, by means of an in-app notification, a posting on the App's official website, or a description in the App Store update notes.
  3. If you continue to use the App on or after the effective date of the revised Terms, you are deemed to have agreed to the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the revised Terms, please stop using the App and follow the procedures in Article 12 (uninstall, cancel any active subscription, etc.).

Article 17 — General Provisions

  1. No assignment by user: You may not, without the prior written consent of the Service Provider, assign, transfer, pledge, lend, or otherwise dispose of your contractual position under these Terms or any rights or obligations under these Terms to any third party.
  2. Business transfer: If the Service Provider transfers the business associated with the App to a third party (including by way of business transfer, corporate split, merger, or any other transfer of the entity providing the App), the Service Provider may, in connection with such transfer, assign your contractual position under these Terms, your rights and obligations under these Terms, your purchase records, and any data generated through the App to the transferee, and you hereby consent in advance to such assignment.
  3. Severability: If any provision or part of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable under applicable law, the remaining provisions, and the remaining parts of any partially invalid provision, shall continue in full force and effect. The Service Provider and the user shall in good faith negotiate to amend the invalid or unenforceable provision (or part) to the extent necessary to render it valid, in a manner that preserves the original intent and economically and legally equivalent effect.
  4. Language: The official text of these Terms is the Japanese version. Any translation of these Terms into English or other languages is provided for reference only; only the Japanese text shall have legal effect, and in case of any discrepancy between the translation and the Japanese original, the Japanese original shall prevail.
  5. Matters not provided for: If a matter is not addressed by these Terms, or if there is doubt as to interpretation, the Service Provider and the user shall, in accordance with the principle of good faith, promptly resolve the matter through consultation.

Article 18 — Governing Law and Jurisdiction

  1. These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Japan. However, this provision does not limit any mandatory consumer protection rights granted to you under the laws of your country or region of residence.
  2. Any dispute arising in connection with the App shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Tokyo District Court as the court of first instance.
